Systemair's Retrofit Makes Existing Ventilation Sustainable and Cost-Effective
Modernization is not just about replacing components – it is a process that combines smart technology with long-term sustainability. By upgrading parts such as fans, control systems, cooling coils, and heat pumps, Systemair can transform older ventilation solutions into more efficient and environmentally friendly systems, with energy savings of up to 60%.
"There are two main occasions when Retrofit is particularly valuable," explains Kyrre Magnus Tørhaug, General Manager at Menerga AS, part of the Systemair Group. "The first is when the technology starts to become outdated, but the unit itself is in good condition. It can be like restoring a car – you replace the engine and other key components with new technology that increases efficiency and reduces energy consumption. The second situation is when buildings are constructed in a way that makes it difficult, or sometimes impossible, to install completely new systems."
A current example is the project at Skien Leisure Park in Norway, where Menerga has helped give an old system new life. "Due to the building's design, it was impossible to install new units without extensive construction work," says Tørhaug. "By instead modernizing the existing system, we were able to implement modern and energy-efficient components, including advanced heat pump technology with power regulation." He points out that this type of solution not only improves energy performance but also extends the lifespan of the systems by an additional 15–20 years.

A Flexible and Sustainable Solution
In buildings with specific adaptation requirements, Retrofit is often the most practical way forward. "When ventilation systems are customized, it can be difficult to find new models that fit. Then it is both economically and environmentally beneficial to work with upgrades," says Tørhaug.
Reusing and improving existing systems is also an important part of meeting today's sustainability goals. "When we can maintain the unit's original structure but replace fans, electronics, and heat pumps, we create a solution that not only improves energy efficiency but also reduces waste and resource waste," he continues.
Systemair's and Menerga's Retrofit enable companies to create modern and efficient ventilation solutions when entire systems cannot be replaced. "Extending the lifespan and reducing energy consumption, while preserving existing resources, is part of our commitment to sustainable ventilation," concludes Tørhaug.
